Pace is tempo โ and tempo is patience, upgraded. Four letters spell it out: P, A, C, and E. Learn them, and you will control the pace of a rally instead of just reacting to it.
P โ Patience
Stay in the rally. Build the point. Let the rally develop instead of rushing a low-percentage shot from a tough spot. Patience keeps you balanced, keeps your paddle up, and keeps you ready for the ball that matters. A patient player does not give the point away โ they make the other side work for it.
Try it: in a dink rally, aim for three more balls in play than you usually manage before you look for an attack. You will be surprised how often the attack comes to you.
A โ Awareness
Awareness is how you spot opportunities. Watch your opponent, not just your own shot: a player stepping back from the kitchen line, a paddle dropping low, a ball that sits up, a gap opening in the middle. Awareness turns patience into a plan, because you know what you are waiting for.
Try it: before each rally, pick one cue to watch for, like a high ball or an opponent out of position. When you see it, you will know it.
C โ Consistency
Get the ball in, again and again. A reliable serve, a reliable return, a reliable dink, and a reliable third shot put pressure on your opponents without you having to hit a winner. When you are consistent, your opponents have to beat you. Most points at the 3.0 to 4.0 level are decided by who keeps the ball in play longer, not by who hits the hardest shot.
Try it: count how many balls you put in play in a row, and aim for one more than your last rally, every rally.
E โ Energy
Energy is the Yeah! in your game. Say yeah to your partner, yeah to a good shot, yeah to going for it when the opportunity is there. Positive energy keeps a pair together, and full commitment keeps a shot clean. When you see your opportunity, do not hesitate halfway โ commit to the shot and go for it, together.
Try it: celebrate the small wins out loud โ a good dink, a smart reset, a well-built point. Energy is contagious, and it carries into the next rally.
How the four letters fit together โ and why they spell pace
Patience gives you time. Awareness shows you what to wait for. Consistency keeps you in the rally while you wait. Energy gives you the commitment to act when the moment comes. Together, they let you set the pace: slow the rally down with soft dinks and resets when you need to settle, then speed it up when the ball sits up or your opponent is out of position.
Pace is not about playing fast all the time. It is about choosing when the point changes โ a soft ball to buy time, a firm ball to take time away, a pause in a dink rally before the speed-up. You are still patient, but now you are patient with a plan, and the plan has a pace.
Put it into your game
Pick one letter for your next game. Play a whole game focused only on Awareness, then a game focused only on Energy, and see which one changes your score most. Then put all four together: be patient, stay aware, stay consistent, and bring the energy.
