You don't need a new paddle or a harder shot. At the 3.0 to 4.0 level, where you stand wins more points than how you swing. Here are seven positioning upgrades to put into your game.
Basic
1. Serve and stay
Hold your ground after your serve until you see the return. The return is coming back deep — creeping in early leaves you scrambling backward to short-hop it. Stay back, read the return, then move in on your third shot.
2. Give yourself room on the return
Start a step or two behind the baseline so a deep serve can't jam you. Give yourself room, then move in after contact.
Must Have
1. Move up together on thirds
When your partner hits the third shot, move forward with them instead of staying planted at the baseline. Arrive at the kitchen as a pair, with no gap between you.
In pickleball, we creep diagonally after the third shot because it helps us close the distance to the kitchen while maintaining better court coverage and balance with our partner. The key is to move according to the ball's direction and the opponents' response, not simply to walk diagonally every time.
Diagonal movement helps the two players advance as a team, reducing the gap between them and avoiding an exposed middle.
2. Move diagonally through transition
Instead of running straight ahead in your own lane, move diagonally toward the kitchen, following the ball. Get stable before you hit. Move, stop, hit — then move again.
3. Hold the kitchen line
Toes near the line, paddle up, and take balls out of the air when you can. Hanging back gives up the court and lets balls drop at your feet. Points are won at the line — get there and hold it.
4. Recover to the middle after going wide
After chasing a wide ball, get back toward the middle of your side before the next shot comes, so you're ready for the reply.
5. Cover the middle together
The middle isn't a line down the court for each player to defend alone. Move with your partner, shift with the ball, and cover the middle together — talk to each other, and let the forehand in the middle take it when it makes sense.
Put it into your game
Pick one or two that felt familiar and work on them in your next games. Positioning is the fastest upgrade in pickleball — no new strokes required.
