Master the return: how to hit deeper, more effective returns

The serve is just the start — the return is your first real chance to dictate the point. Here's how to push it deep and take control.

Net Deep Zone Your baseline Opponent's baseline

In pickleball, the serve is just the start. The return of serve is your first real opportunity to dictate the pace of the point. If you find yourself consistently hitting shallow returns that allow your opponents to attack, it's time to upgrade your approach.

Why depth matters

A deep return flips the pressure back onto the serving team.

A deep, high-quality return forces your opponent to hit their third shot from behind the baseline, often while they are still moving. By pushing them back, you neutralize their advantage and give your team more time to establish a solid position at the kitchen line.

Keys to a quality return

Four fundamentals that turn a defensive return into an offensive weapon.

Early preparation

Don't wait for the ball to cross the net. Get your paddle into the ready position as soon as you see the trajectory of the serve.

Controlled power

Instead of swinging wildly, use a compact, consistent stroke. Focus on making solid contact in front of your body.

Use the full court

A deep return down the middle is the safe, high-percentage play — make that your default. Once it's reliable, stretch them wide and deep to open up tougher angles, but never trade depth for angle.

Follow through

Complete your swing to ensure the ball carries depth rather than floating in the air.

Visualize your target

Pick a zone, not just a direction.

Imagine the court divided into zones. Your goal is to keep the ball in the Deep Zone — the 3–5 feet closest to the baseline, highlighted in the diagram above. A high-arching trajectory that lands consistently in this area turns no-man's-land into your territory: the serving team has to play their third shot on the move, from deep.
